The Main Lodge of Camp Uncas is a five-bedroom,
3.5-bathroom, winterized, log home, with each room more beautiful
than the next. The first floor has a large yet intimate great room
with exquisite fieldstone fireplace which serves as a gathering
place for a big family or group of friends.
A dining area with a large oak top, log-base
table seats up to twelve on original Sagamore ladder-back chairs
and built-in banquettes. A smaller, matching table that seats six
is located by the front window.
The original Durant 14-foot long rustic sideboard
provides ample storage and decorative interest. Different sitting
areas lend themselves to multiple groupings for reading, conversation,
board games or projects.
Off a small hallway from the living room,
which gives the bedroom privacy, is the master bedroom with its
own dramatic fireplace, two built-in closets (an usual feature for
a home of this period), and a dressing alcove with large rustic
dresser.
The original, queen-size, rustic bed and
a smaller rustic dresser complete the room.
Off the bedroom is the master bath, with
J. Pierpont Morgan’s original huge bathtub-and-shower, original
sink, and toilet
On the opposite side of the great room from
the master bedroom is another small hallway connecting to the kitchen,
bedroom-den, screened porch, and stairway to the second floor. There
was no kitchen originally in the main lodge as owners and their
guests took all their meals in the separate Dining Hall building,
some distance from the Main Lodge. The
contemporary kitchen, with cherry cabinets, provides ample work
and storage space—and a built in bench for two or three family
members inevitably congregating there.
Off the same hallway is another bedroom which
also serves as a den. It contains a Stickley queen sofa-bed for
those occasions when a fifth bedroom in the Main Lodge is needed.
With sofa and rocking chairs facing a beautiful stone fireplace
with an attractive Vermont Castings stove on its hearth and, to
the right, a large plasma TV, the room serves as a warm and comfortable
den and also a study containing Durant’s original rustic desk.
A full bath with original claw foot tub, original sink, and toilet
adjoins the den/bedroom.
A few steps from the kitchen is the covered
screened porch, which serves as a major room of the house three
seasons of the year. One area seats 12 people for outdoor dining.
Another area of the porch has a sitting area with an original-to-Uncas,
Old Hickory large couch and porch rockers, plus additional couch,
which is perfect for reading, conversation, drinks and appetizers,
and watching beautiful sunsets across the lake.
At the top of a set of rustic stairs from
the hallway by the kitchen is a second floor landing and half bath
with washer and dryer.
To the left of the landing is
a bedroom with lovely fireplace and all original rustic furniture
including queen bed, twin bed, dresser, and matching desk-tables.
To the right of the landing is a large bedroom
with extensive windows on opposite sides facing the main part and
the lagoon part of the lake. Currently used as a dormitory room,
original rustic furnishings include two matching twin beds, two
matching children’s beds, and two large dressers.
A hallway beyond the dorm room leads to a
full bath with original claw foot tub and shower, original sink,
and toilet, and another bedroom with original rustic furnishings
including two matching twin beds, dresser, table with mirror, and
bookcase/shelf unit.
A full basement below the Main Lodge contains
ample storage and shop space. A new (2009) oil-fired, forced hot
air furnace provides year-round comfort.
